CORRECT EATING AND NUTRITION IN CASE OF ALLERGY: MILK AND DAIRY PRODUCTS
For a variety of reasons, explained in Chapter 8 and elsewhere, milk is a potent allergen to some people. Cow's milk, fed too early to unsuspecting infants, can damage their digestive systems and render them either allergic, or sensitive, to milk for life. Dr Reuben says: Cow's milk — from the dairy and in baby formulas — is one of the primary causes of allergies in babies… Human babies fed on breast milk have almost 100 per cent freedom from intestinal infections, far fewer respiratory infections and almost total immunity to allergies. Pasteurized milk is difficult to digest, even for people who are tolerant to it, due to the fact that the pasteurization process destroys the thirty-five natural enzymes which are found in all raw milk. The most important of these is lipase which breaks down fat and, thus prevents undigested fat globules entering the bloodstream and overstressing the immune system, causing dangerously high levels of cholesterol to accumulate. These enzymes are needed by the body to digest milk, by breaking it down into lactose and other components. Without them, the digestive organs are forced to work harder than they were meant to, causing them to be overstressed and contributing to dysfunction in later life.
In a medical paper, 'The Effect of Heat Processed Foods and Metabolized Vitamin D Milk, on the Dentofacial Structures of Experimental Animals', Dr Francis Pottenger described tests on cats where one group was fed only raw milk and others, pasteurized and processed milks. All generations on the raw milk thrived. The others, however, progressively deteriorated and developed severe defects and disease, over two generations. The third generation (of which only a few survived), was so afflicted that there was no attempt, by the survivors, to produce a fourth generation.
An example of milk allergy causing mental illness, is described in a paper by Dr Maurice Bowerman, of Beaverton, Oregon. He referred to five of his psychiatric patients who for years had suffered from confusion, detachment, poor memory, poor mental efficiency and paranoia. When milk was removed from their diets, four completely recovered, and the other improved significantly. I wonder how many unfortunate people, throughout the world, are being wrongly diagnosed and treated, by psychiatrists, who are not aware of the devastating effects of food and chemical allergies?
Dr William Philpott points out that milk allergies and grain allergies, often go hand in hand. This is due to the damage done to the upper intestinal tract by allergic reactions to grain. The intestine loses its ability to produce the, all-essential, lactase enzyme, plus many others that are necessary to digest milk. Thus, milk becomes a poison with devastating effects on both physical and mental health.
It is a fallacy that people outgrow milk sensitivity. If you had trouble with milk as a child, then you will have trouble as an adult. The tragedy of it is that many people, as children, were milk-allergic, but that fact was never realized by doctor or parents. Now, as adults, they continue to deteriorate and are usually addicted, without knowing it, to a wide range of dairy products, such as cheese, ice cream, puddings and virtually anything with milk in it.
Another cause of milk allergy is galactosemia which occurs, sometimes hereditarily, when the liver is unable to change galactose into glucose. All dairy products, except cheddar cheese, contain galactose, although the amount of galactose in butter is negligible; so that people with this problem, can usually eat some cheddar cheese and butter, if they scrupulously avoid all other dairy products.
The important thing to remember is that milk is the second major allergenic food. Reactions to it are often not obvious, and there is a wide range, in the degree of allergy, from slight through to severe. Even the most severe allergy may be in the form of a masked addiction so that, neither the sufferer, nor his conventional medical practitioner can relate the problem to his chronic and, perhaps, bizarre physical and mental condition. As Dr Reuben says, 'Adults do not need milk.' Nevertheless, milk and milk products are very attractive foods and may be eaten by some people without harm.
It is a mistake, however, to eat dairy products on a daily basis. Like cereals, they should be eaten sparingly and if possible, only raw milk and raw milk products should be taken. If you have any suspicion at all of food-related health problems, you should treat all milk and dairy products as prime suspects until proven otherwise.
The old pedantism, that dairy products are essential for the maintenance of good health, is a fallacy, perpetrated by bureaucrats and medical people, who find it easier to mouth the same old, outdated health platitudes than to bother taking note of progress in the real world of scientific knowledge. To quote Dr Walter Alvarez, a leading American psychiatrist and allergist: 'We doctors are the most stubborn lot in the world! Many doctors are so stubborn as to think that a fact can't be true if they were not taught it in medical school.'
For example, the main argument in the past has been that milk is an essential source of calcium and phosphorous. For a start, modern scientific research has shown that we need a lot less calcium than was originally thought. In fact, too much calcium is dangerous, because it can damage the kidneys and cause kidney stones, which can virtually ruin your life. Calcium is stored well by the body, so you don't have to eat it every day. What most people do not realize is that an average daily diet, without milk, contains far more calcium than the body can use. In fact, your body rejects about 80 per cent of all calcium you eat, in order to keep your blood concentration relatively low. Such foods as whole wheat bread, beans, olives, peanuts and dozens of other vegetables, contain more calcium than the average person can use.
The same applies to phosphorous. It is almost impossible to become deficient in phosphorous, and an adequate diet of fruit and vegetables will provide ample quantities for good health. It is the belief of Dr Reuben that 'Everybody doesn't need milk and more than half the people in the world — including nearly a quarter of the people in the United States — can get sick if they drink milk.'
